Reading

Ashes to Admin bookcover I am big on Audiobooks and have just finished Ashes to Admin by Evie King. I highly recommend reading it if you are curious about death, funerals, or other morbid curiosities. It really opened my mind about the human experience! Lot’s of great insight and it is much more lighthearted than you might think.

Book of Delights bookcover I have nearly finished reading Ross Gay’s - The Book of Delights. I don’t ever think to read poetry, or collections of essays, but after hearing Ross Gay in an interview on CBC Radio I was compelled to give his book a listen. His voice is great to listen to, and he has such a unique way of looking at things. It is inspiring! I have found myself seeing delight in more places each day.

All Systems Red bookcover Lastly, I am re-reading All Systems Red by Martha Wells. This is the first book in the Murderbot Diaries series, and it is great! I was looking through the included books in my Audible subscription to bridge the gap between monthly credits and stumbled across this one. Most of the series are very short books and I absolutely love them! If you like hard, dystopian sci-fi then give the series a go! You won’t be disappointed.

Thoughts/Focus

Lately, I have been really digging into my ADHD diagnosis and trying to view my life differently. Instead of rubbing up against the social norms and failing, as I have done my whole life, I need to come up with ways of doing things that work for me and try to let go of it feeling weird or thinking others will judge me for my methods.

So far I have learnt more about breaking tasks down into smaller pieces (a surprisingly tricky thing to do well). I have also started using post-it notes on the fridge to remind me of tasks that I will forget about, like getting rid of the cardboard in the garage. I only know it exists when I am in the garage, but I am only ever in the garage because I am already doing something else… So it doesn’t get done. With the post-it notes though, I have already crushed a bunch of tasks that I would normally forget about!

Also, learning to not be so hard on yourself. You literally cannot do it all. There’s just so much to do! Give yourself a break man!!!

Projects

Currently, (as always) I have multiple projects on the go and in mind:

Projects on the go:

  • This website/blog - Getting things started has been a really fun and easy(ish) project for me! I’m loving it 😁
  • Speed Notes - A Python based notetaking desktop application, because I want note editing software built around SPEED instead of organization! I like to feel the power of flying along the keyboard and pasting in screenshots of my jank code as I work as fast as I can think! ADHD FTW there!!! 🦸
  • Chain Link Fence - We have all the materials sitting in the garage, I just need to find time to knock it all together. I can’t wait to get it finished because the dogs are going to love having their own outside space they can use whenever they like! It’s too dangerous to let them out otherwise unfortunately. Better make this the priority!

Projects in mind:

  • I have a small collection of miniature monster trucks thanks to my sons obsession with monster trucks! I want to build a miniature version of the Monster Jam stadium courses out of wood, paper mache, sand, and paint. Then we can play together and do sick stunts, just like on the telly! 🤗
  • Sunset Camera Raspberry Pi - This one has been in mind for a couple of years now. We get beautiful sunsets right out the front of our house. My plan is to build a Raspberry Pi setup with a weatherproof case and a decent camera so I can capture the sunset everyday and post it to a website for people to see. I think it would be amazing to see a year in sunset images!

Listening

I am currently listening to anything with Thom Yorke in it. Radiohead, Thom Yorke’s solo stuff, Atoms for Peace, etc… I’m loving it! With my new sit-stand desk at work I can stand there and bob around to some sick beats while working away. Nice!

I think these “Now” pages are meant to be short, but I got carried away in my excitement! My baaaaad… I’ll leave it there for now. Chow!
