Quick Book Breakdown

I’ve crushed so many books since my last post, and then going on parental leave, that it is probably easier to make a short list with a quick blurb about each one. I’m trying to keep it short and snappy!

It by Stephen King - I am currently reading this book. So far it is REALLY good! Before reading this one I had no idea what the book was about, apart from seeing the movie trailer many many years ago. It’s already got me hooked and I’m only just meeting the main characters! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Hell Divers 2: Ghosts - This was a great sequel to the first book! Super action packed and starts building the foundation to a larger plot line that I imagine carries across the remaining 11ish books in the series. The characters in this book are all tough as hell, and the monsters and environments are right up my alley! The main villain is kind of understandable when you see what stress he is under, but you can tell that he is losing his grip. It’s such a great action movie packed into a book. Awesome!

Friends, lovers, and the big terrible thing Matthew Perry - I love Friends, and my favourite character is Chandler. I always wondered about Matthew Perry and what he got up to professionally outside of Friends. I’m not a big movie or TV buff, so I never came across his movie work. He always seemed quiet in interviews and it seemed like there was something going on with him in his personal life. Reading this book was a huge eye opener and taught me a lot about addiction. I knew that addiction should be thought of as a disease, but this book really helped me change my perspective on a deeper level and update my built in biases and prejudices toward people suffering with addiction. The 90s really hammered home to me that drug addicts are bad people. This book undid a lot of that and I now feel like I know next to nothing about addiction and what it is like for people that are suffering with it. I also feel like I’ve always had an addictive personality, and this feeling has kept me from exploring drugs and alcohol. I now consider myself very lucky as I could have easily gone down a similar rabbit hole to Matthew Perry and many other people that succumb to addiction and end up controlled by it. Many people on Goodreads said that the book was repetitive, and it was, but I think that was part of the point. To hammer home the cyclic nature of addiction, depression and the things people try to fix themselves and break the cycle before it repeats again. Great read, even if your not a Friends fan. Matthew Perry was much more than just Chandler Bing.

Supermarket by Bobby somebody… (a.k.a Logic) - This book was recommended to me by my brother as it is written by one of his favourite music artists. It’s a psychological thriller about a writer working in a Supermarket and his battles with mental health issues. The twists were fairly obvious, but it was a fun read and the audible version is narrated by the author which is always makes it better! The writing style was also very cool. Very modern and casual, it flowed really well and was easy to listen to the whole way through.
