Battery Daddy!
Today I received a Battery Daddy battery organizer! I know we have a ton of batteries around the house and I haaaate spending ages trying to find them when I need some for a remote or a kids toy. Now they are organized in a little carry case all in one place in the house where I can grab what I need in seconds! What a victory! I’m taking hold of my life a little more! It even includes a battery tester. You bet your sweet double A’s I went around testing every lone battery I found in a drawer or behind a cabinet!
This must be how the Energizer bunny feels ALL the time!!!
In other news, I have been having my first dry spell on Audible… I am between credits and have not been able to find any really gripping books. I started listening to the Freedom’s Fire Box Set, Books 1-6. It is ok… but I feel like the book is trying to be more serious and the voice actor is making it feel more like a lighthearted sci-fi action movie. I’m just not getting wrapped up in it like I do with other books. I am zoning out more frequently.
Next, I found the Necronomicon by H.P. Lovecraft. I have read some of his work online via the Internet Archive and always wanted to read more of his stuff. There are a couple of issues with this anthology though. The first book had me hooked! Super vivid imagery and a great story that really sets the tone! The second and third books were broken into chapters. I’m guessing this is because they were published as articles in magazines/newspapers originally. These stories were ok, but strayed from the “horrors of the void” I was expecting and each chapter introduced the plot and characters again each time, which is a bit dull when your listening to each chapter one after the next. There is also the glaring racism and problematic mindset of the era… Not to mention the sometimes lazy feeling “indescribable horror! Whooooo!” and all the characters being so close to madness and insanity at all times. They can go from being morbidly curious, to absolute crackpot in an instant without the reader getting to know much more than “It was bad, and grotesque, and more things that are too gruesome to put down on paper for fear I may faint!” Oh my… Were people really that dainty back then? Are we all just calloused headcases these days? When did people stop needing smelling salts around the house?
I have to mention the racism because it is particularly blunt. One of the books, Rats In The Walls, was very good! Except for the name of the narrators cat. The cat plays a pretty major role in the book, and appears often. Who the fuck, at any point in history EVER, names a cat that?! It is the most stupid, on the nose, immersion-breaking name I have ever heard! I was listening to this amazing voice actor (all the voice actors in the book are brilliant by the way) deliver this scary and dramatic reading about this guys family history bending his mind and changing him slowly, and all of a sudden he says the cats name and I am pulled right out of the story and laughing my ass off at this stupid fucking name! I will not write the name here. If you want to know then you’ll need to look up the book to see what I’m talking about. I’m sure you’ll agree with me once you’ve heard the cats name.
The next book I thought I’d try based on the name. It has the most boring name for a book I have ever seen, so I had to know what it was all about! It is called Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. So far it has been talking about how first nations people built a relationship with the land and nature, and they live in a gift centric society where things from nature are gifts to us and in turn we gift back to nature and others because we are grateful of their gifts. I think I’m half way right there… I really want to learn more about First Nations culture and the way they treat the land and nature. It is fascinating, and I really think that they have had this whole “life” thing figured out for a long time now but no-one is tuning in because the world is so fast paced and busy, with the focus being on success, individuality, and legacy. I am interested to see where this book is taking me. I am definitely getting into it more than the other 2 so far! But it is early days. I am still less than an hour into it.
Anyways, it’s getting late and I’m all wore out from hunting batteries! Until next time buddy 😉
